If some people attacked you and your family and you ran away from that place for your life, are you a coward? If you fought till death even though you had the option to run away, are you brave? Which decision is correct?

In the modern age, who provides safety and security to common people? There are police department and defense who protect the country and the people of that country from internal and external threats. What happens when the respective departments do not fulfill the promise of providing the safety to the common people? Should the common people trust the department or should they make their own arrangement for their backup security? What happens when anti-social people rise and are uncontrolled by the Government? Should the common people make their own arrangement if the government’s law and order is not effective and cannot provide 100% security to common people?

Government security or personal security

At this juncture of civilization, humans cannot go back to the lifestyle of ancient age. When people will lose the trust on police and administration and start arranging their own protection, then it’s the game of jungle that is known as the game of survival of the fittest.

As per our history of civilization, earlier humans were protecting themselves on their own. Then they used to form groups and defend themselves from the other groups. Then came the era of kings and kingdoms. Kings had security system or soldiers who were protecting or punishing their subjects. Then came the concept of country. People formed Government through different mechanism. They designed their protection system. Instead of everyone having their own protection, they devised a common protection system. Common people gave up weapons and fight, started following the defined code of conduct to live peacefully. The common people accepted that process of living and did not focus on their self-defense. It is no more the survival of the fittest game. It is like, everyone will get protection from any internal or external threats. People have trusted and adapted that security system.

But what happens when that security system is not efficient, sufficient, sensible, responsible, strong, wise and honest? What happens when some people illegally acquire weapons and conspire to harm the common people? Are the common people responsible for their safety? If they runaway for their life without a fight, are they coward?

Human society can survive with a common understanding. When that common understanding is compromised, then again, the law of jungle applies. If everyone focuses on self-defense, then there is no concept of society. We are going back to ancient age. If human wants to prosper, then they have to become wise. If peace is expected from everyone, then the law and order department has to provide 100 percent security to the common people. 80 % or 90% , will not work. No one should suffer. How to provide this 100 percent security?

If we want a stable country, we should groom the children properly who want to join politics, administrative services, defense, police force, so that they do their duty properly and common people will do their work properly without worrying for their safety or coward or brave label. We don’t want every citizen to be warriors and fight with each other as we do not want every citizen to be doctor or engineer or scientist or dancer or actor. Division of labor makes a society efficient and sustainable.

People should not hesitate to participate in the strengthening of security system. They have to invest by paying tax or by donation and they have to also participate in providing the information of any anti-social activities in their surroundings to the intelligence agencies. People should never compromise on electing the right candidate for the governance. As you sow, so shall you reap.
